B.A.M.S ( Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery )

Bachelor Of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery ( B.A.M.S) is an integrated Medical Degree  of modern Medicine and traditional Ayurveda. The degree is of five and half year duration, including one year internship  after passing  10+2 with PCB. The syllabus and curriculam is uniform throughout India. The course structure is aimed to provide theory as well as practical training in the healing science of Ayurveda.The first year starts with principle of learning of philosophy and History of Ayurveda, Physiology, Anatomy and Pharmaceutical Sciences as per the syllabus of Central Council Of Indian Medicine, Statutory body ( Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970). During the second year of the course  in depth knowledge in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toxicology and Medical Jurisprudence is developed. Pathology & Microbiology, Gynaecology&Obsterics and Paediatrics constitute the core of the third year of learning is General Surgery, ENT and dentistry and Internal Medicine including Mans rogaRasayan&Vajikarana are in focus in the final year of Undergraduate course.

A  BAMS graduate can practice modern / allopathic medicine in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Many people are unaware of this fact that BAMS doctors can practice modern / allopathic medicine. According to the privileges in the Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940, Rules 1945 Sec 2ee(iii), States have right to allow BAMS doctors seem to prescribe more irrationally as compared to MBBS doctors when comparative evaluation of MBBS and BAMS doctors prescription trends was carried out using World Health Organization Criteria.

Scope of Ayurveda in India

A correct balance of this five is needed to restore health.Analysists says that almost 80 percent of Indians uses Ayurvedic treatment either in its entirety or combining it with allopathic medication, As lifestyle disease grip urban population, awareness about the world`s oldest  medicine  increased phenomenally.

The increasing demand for Ayurvedic doctors across pharmaceutical companies and government hospitals is due to the trust developed by the alternative medicine as the herbal route to curing diseases. In 2003, the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani,Siddha and Homeopathy( AYUSH )  was established by Government of India to support and promote  research and education in the field of Ayurvedic Science. There is a wide network of Ayurvedic hospitals and colleges in the country.

Department of  AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, says, So far they have set up about 300 Ayurveda colleges, 2000 hospitals, 13000 dispensaries and 7,910 manufacturing units. The number is significantly larger than other traditional systems of medicines like Unani,Siddha, Naturopathy and Homeopathy.

Graduate training prepares you for a research career in institutions from  health, medicine, agriculture and environmental sectors. Apart from that, pharmaceutical, food and beverages sectors also recruit graduates in abig way. Students interested in postgraduate studies have as many as 20 specialized fields to select from. This can be attained by pursuing  courses leading to Master`s of Medicine ( MD-Ayu ) / Master of Surgery ( MS-Ayu) degree. Some of the popular specializations  are Kaya Chikitsa, Panchakarssa, Drayyaguna, Salya, Salyaka and Prasutitantra, Rasasatra and Kshar Sutra. Apart from MD specialization you can also go for PG Diploma programmes.

Research programme like PhD is essential for takinf up research at various and institutions. Some of the institutes that offer dotorateprogrammes include  Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha ( CCRAS ), Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidhyala and National Institute of Ayurveda ( Jaipur & Jamnagar).

1)  Government hospitals and privately-held ones are endowed with well-equipped Ayurvedic units.
2) Ayurvedic doctors also set up their independent clinics along with retailing of Ayurvedic medicines.
3) Ayurveda doctors  are employed at various wellness centres. Integration of Ayurveda  with wellness therapies at resorts and spas.
4) Supervisory and research roles with pharmaceutical industry like, Dabur, Zandu, Himalaya and AryaVaidyaSala.
5) Ayurveda doctors are employed for drug research, various  companies grant scholarships to deserving students

NOTE: To be able to practice Ayurveda, BAMS degree holders must be registered at the respective state council to abide with the Indian Medical  Central Council  Act. The registration with Central Council Of Indian Medicine ( CCIM ) IS necessary for a national wide practice.
